Ambulance for All
One of the first priorities I have while running for county commission is the ambulance service. I went to the Commission discussing the weak ambulance service for the north county area. They used statistics that said there were not enough calls in that area to add another station. It made more sense to them to spend the money in Manhattan. I tried to explain that the EMS is a service, not a bottom-line business. When they were spending the money to move an ambulance to the county shops I again went to a meeting. I pointed out that was very little improvement and the EMS director said most of that station's time would still be spent in Manhattan. Moving the station only cut about 8 minutes off their response time and it still almost 40 minutes to the NE and NW corners of the county. My proposal is to add another station in Leonardville which is centrally located in the north county. Leonardville is no more than 20 minutes to any area in the north county.
Not Your Average Politician
I have never considered myself to be a politician, something about that word always makes me uneasy. My sole objective for this campaign and election is to make the lives of Riley County residents better. That's it. Not a stepping stone to a higher office or more power, just enacting change in the county I've made my home.
A Commissioner for the People
Running the business part of Riley County is an important part of a commissioner’s work but I want to also be a contact for the residents. If someone has questions or comments about something in the county, I want them to feel comfortable contacting me. Whether they agree or disagree, I will discuss their questions. I am encouraged by the number of people that have reached out to me since I announced my candidacy. They have talked about problems they have had with the county, things they want the county to continue with, and things they would like to see changed. I appreciate the input and have been making notes. Inquisitive county residents are what make Riley County so strong, and I will work to meet them where they are.
City Council Experience
I have served on the Riley City Council for the last 10 years. I have learned that budgets and accounting for government entities are not like business budgets. There are different rules involved. Municipal budgets are prepared and finalized 6 months before the year starts. They are also harder to adjust during the year when conditions change. I will bring experience and knowledge to the Riley County Commission.
